In 2008, Mailet Lopez was diagnosed with breast cancer.〔 She decided to build a site focused on creating connections between people who can help one another in dealing with cancer through their unique experiences.〔 As co-founder of Squeaky Wheel Media she used the company's experience in web development and design to produce IHadCancer.com.
The name, 'I ''Had'' Cancer' stems from Mailet's personal battle with the disease and represents the importance of a positive attitude. “It’s looking towards the future; it’s providing hope.” expressed Mailet in an interview with CBS News.
IHadCancer has become the most engaged cancer community online today, with a community of more than 250,000. The site has won numerous accolades, including "#1 Social Networking Site That Can Save Your Life" as well as the Webby Award for The Best Community Website both in 2012 and 2015. ()
